On Sunday October 19th, 2008, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM, there will be an epic youth event entitled, The Dream Youth Event, held at the Third Space Church in Peterborough.
The purpose: To inform, inspire, and engage Peterborough youth in social justice activities.
Let's define these things for you:
social justice: The belief that every individual and group is entitled to fair and equal rights and participation in social, educational, and economic opportunities. The agenda is to increase understanding of oppression and inequality and taking action to overcome them.
engage: Carry out or participate in an activity; be involved in
The format will be pretty simple, giving you, the youth, a chance to tell us, your leaders, the things that you care about, that strike you as unfair. We will facilitate discussion and encourage you to think about certain things going on in Peterborough. We will then break up into smaller groups with similar concern and discuss how to be informed and given opportunity in this direction.
There will be some form of dinner between 5:30 and 6:00 and the main event from 6:00 to 8:00. Please start thinking about the world around you, what injustice do you see that makes you upset? Think. Christian Harvey of St. John's Anglican Church in Peterborough, Carlo Raponi from the Bridge Youth Centre, Becky Rodin from Auburn Bible Chapel and myself, Michael VanDerHerberg from St. John's Ida are organizing the event. And we expect you to be there.
